CABEZA DE VACA

Cabeza de Vaca, Esteban (a black Moorish Slave), and two other Spaniards who survived, traversed the grassy plains and arid lands of Texas and the Southwest as slaves of the Indian tribe that captured them. They eventually escaped and made their way to Mexico City in 1536; there they told of their adventures. A mounted expeditionary force to search for the fabulous Seven Cities of Cibola was soon underway.
